The Regency Project

The Regency Project is intended for the northwest corner of Agoura Road and Cornell Road in the center where the Regency Theaters used to be. It is planned to be a mixed-use development consisting of a four-story apartment building containing 278 units, with 38 of those units qualifying as state mandated, very low and low income housing. There will also be a parking garage and approximately 5200 square feet of commercial space. It is possible that the project will break ground by March or April. 2025. For more details from the City's website, click here.

What the City's renderings and descriptions fail to reveal is that the Regency Center is situated in the WUI (wildland/urban interface), in the VHFHSZ (very high fire hazard severity zone as established by CalFire), right at the base of the very fragile Santa Monica Mountains. It is also one block from the intersection of Kanan and Agoura Roads which the City plans to load up with considerably more housing. Since Kanan Road is the primary evacuation route for the communities along its nine mile stretch south to PCH and for a western section of the City of Malibu, this raises significant traffic and safety concerns for those potentially affected. The risks are self-evident, nonetheless, those concerns have been made known to the City for many years to no avail.
